Usage Instructions For Outdoor Power Cable Protective Sleeves

Qingdao Longchangjie Machinery Co., Ltd. describes the main aspects of the use of power cable protective sleeves, including the selection of materials, the installation process, and the final acceptance and maintenance. The following are the usage methods and precautions for outdoor power cable protective sleeves:

I. Material Selection

Material Selection: Choose PVC (for outdoor use), PE (for corrosion resistance), or fiberglass reinforced plastic (for high-strength scenarios) based on the environment. For areas prone to fire, explosion, or moisture, select flame-retardant and moisture-proof materials.

Size Matching: The inner diameter of the conduit should be at least 1.5 times the outer diameter of the cable to ensure smooth installation and sufficient space for heat dissipation; if it is too small, it will be difficult to insert, and if it is too large, the protective effect will be reduced.

II. Installation Process

Preparation:

When we carry out the pre-processing before installation, we need to first clean the oil stains and dust off the cable surface. At the same time, we should also check if there are any damaged areas on the cable.

Next, we will handle the bushings. We need to cut the length of the bushing according to the condition of the cable to ensure it can match the cable. Moreover, during the cutting process, the cutting edge must be made smooth without any burrs.

Installation and Fixation:

Lay the conduit along the path, avoiding excessive bending; in non-frozen soil areas, the burial depth should be ≥ 0.7 meters, and in frozen soil areas, it should be lower than the frozen soil layer.

Use brackets or clips to fix the conduit to prevent displacement; the distance from the building or trees should be ≥ 0.5 meters.

Cable Insertion and Sealing:

When inserting the cable, apply lubricant to prevent damage to the insulation layer.

III. Protection and Acceptance

When implementing the layer-by-layer protection, 100mm thick fine sand should be laid on both the top and bottom of the cables, followed by the installation of concrete protective plates. It is important that the width of the protective plates exceeds the sides of the cables by 50mm each.

Grounding Requirements: The metal sleeves and supports must be reliably grounded.

Acceptance Criteria:

Insulation Resistance ≥ 10 Megohms; Horizontal spacing between strong/weak current sleeves ≥ 500mm (it is recommended to color-code red and blue for distinction).

Set handhole wells or markers at the turning points/joints (spacing < 50 meters).

IV. Regular inspections cannot be omitted. One should frequently check if the sleeves are damaged, aged, or deformed. Once any problems are identified, the relevant components must be replaced promptly.

In terms of environmental protection, if the soil where the cables are located has chemical corrosiveness, then anti-corrosion sleeves should be used, and warning signs should be set up around them.
